RWO has been developing its ballast water treatment system since 2003, and is the only company which has tested multiple treatment devices in parallel to evaluate the best technology. RWO’s full-scale CleanBallast! 500 m³/hr capacity system has succesfully completed land-based testing and is currently finalizing operational testing aboard a ship. The CleanBallast! system is operated inline using Ballast Water Disc Filters for particle removal and the advanced EctoSys® electrolysis disinfection process during ballast water uptake. RWO has specifically designed the CleanBallast! System for practicability and ease of onboard installation and operation.
As the first treatment step, RWO has designed a proprietary ballast water disc filter that achieves a high flow rate with a small footprint. The filters are specially designed to deliver excellent performance for heavy duty operation in harbors with high sediment load, where most ballasting operations take place. Preventing sediment accumulation in the ballast water tanks gives added values by eliminating the need for tank cleaning and extra weight. The second treatment step is RWO’s proprietary EctoSys® electrolysis disinfection system. It is a patented design to effectively disinfect all global water qualities inline, without the need for consumables or additional power generation systems.
The final step of the process is an RWO-designed algae monitor which scans and controls the effluent quality of the discharged ballast water. While the ship is on a voyage, a regrowth of organisms in the ballast water tank is possible. Because the IMO Standard has to be met at ship discharge, the ballast water is sent through the EctoSys® process a second time, and the algae monitor guarantees compliance with the law.
